Education is fundamental to empowering individuals and breaking the cycle of poverty. Quality education is not only a basic right but also a powerful tool for social transformation, inclusion, and community development. In Bangladesh, millions of children, especially in rural, haor, and char areas, remain out of school or drop out early due to poverty, child labour, early marriage, seasonal flooding, and lack of access. POPI plays an important role in supporting access to education for disadvantaged and marginalized communities, improving learning environments, promoting gender equality, and strengthening awareness of the importance of education. Through innovative approaches, community engagement, and learner-centered initiatives, POPI contributes to creating opportunities for students to learn, grow, and build a better future.
POPI is dedicated to its core mission of inclusivity, which revolves around providing quality education to disadvantaged and marginalized children within society. This commitment is instrumental in shaping the organization's approach to education and community development.
Key Components of our Education Programme
Non-Formal Primary Education (NFPE)
POPI’s non-formal primary education programme provides flexible, community-based learning opportunities for children (typically aged 8–14) who are out of school, have dropped out, or missed formal education due to poverty, remoteness, or other socio-economic barriers. Our NFPE initiatives help children build essential literacy, numeracy, and life skills while creating pathways for reintegration into formal education where possible.
Early Childhood Development and Pre-primary School
Early Childhood Development (ECD) and pre-primary education in Bangladesh are critical, play-based approaches designed for children aged 3–5 to foster cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development. These initiatives focus on school readiness through interactive and child-friendly learning models.
Floating Schools
One of POPI’s most innovative and impactful initiatives is the establishment of boat schools. These floating schools are tailor-made solutions designed to address the unique challenges faced by children living in poverty-prone Haor regions. These areas often experience seasonal flooding and sudden changes in water levels, leading to school absenteeism and dropout. The boat school concept provides a flexible and adaptive educational platform that reaches children who would otherwise be excluded from the education system.
Digital Literacy Programmes
To bridge the digital divide in remote and hard-to-reach regions, POPI actively empowers students through targeted technological integration and digital literacy programmes. By establishing “girls-only” digital centres within schools, the organization provides dedicated spaces where girl students receive hands-on training and orientation on various digital devices and online learning tools. Beyond technical skills, these centres facilitate access to online educational resources for both boys and girls, fostering a more inclusive and comprehensive learning environment. Furthermore, POPI utilizes these digital centres to disseminate vital information on climate change adaptation, equipping students with the knowledge and awareness needed to build resilience within their communities.
Adolescent Development Initiatives
Adolescence is a transformative stage of life that requires guidance, support, and opportunities. POPI’s adolescent development initiatives focus on strengthening the physical, emotional, social, and leadership capacities of young people, empowering them to make informed decisions and become confident and responsible members of society.
Support to Government Primary Schools
POPI works in close collaboration with government primary schools to improve the quality of education and create more supportive learning environments. Through quality enhancement initiatives and school feeding programmes, we contribute to improved student attendance, nutrition, participation, and overall learning outcomes.
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
POPI’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiatives provide practical, industry-responsive skills training and technical knowledge, helping bridge the gap between education and employment. These programmes focus on enhancing employability through vocational courses, including readymade garments, light engineering, and information technology, aimed at reducing poverty and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Adult Literacy Programmes
POPI extends its educational support beyond children to adults within the community. Through adult literacy programmes, we empower individuals with basic literacy and numeracy skills, enabling them to improve their livelihoods, participate more actively in society, and enhance their overall quality of life.
