In Bangladesh, access to quality healthcare and adequate nutrition remains a significant challenge for many vulnerable and marginalized communities, particularly in rural, hard-to-reach, and climate-affected areas. Integrated health and nutrition interventions are essential to improving the overall well-being and resilience of communities. POPI is strongly committed to improving community access to affordable and quality healthcare services. These initiatives focus on strengthening community awareness, promoting preventive healthcare practices, improving maternal and child health and nutrition, and ensuring access to essential health services for women, children, and adolescents.

POPI also plays a critical role in supporting community-based healthcare systems, building the capacity of frontline health workers, and addressing malnutrition through behaviour change communication, nutrition-sensitive livelihoods, and diversified food production. Through collaborative and inclusive approaches, POPI contributes to building healthier, more informed, and resilient communities in its operational areas.

Among the paramount priorities of the POPI Health and Nutrition Programme is the mitigation of health risks and the reduction of malnutrition among mothers, children, and adolescents. We recognize that collaboration and networking are pivotal to achieving these goals, and as such, we actively engage with both government and non-government platforms.

Key components of Health and Nutrition Programme

Health Awareness Campaigns

In POPI’s operational areas, limited health literacy, poverty, and inadequate access to reliable health information continue to affect the well-being of vulnerable communities, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach locations. Health awareness campaigns, mostly conducted through courtyard sessions, play a vital role in promoting preventive healthcare practices, increasing vaccination awareness for children, emphasizing the importance of ANC and PNC services, improving nutrition and hygiene behaviours, and raising awareness on communicable and non-communicable diseases, reproductive health, and maternal and child care.

Capacity Building for Primary Health Service Providers

Strengthening the skills and competencies of frontline health workers is essential for improving the quality and accessibility of primary healthcare services in Bangladesh. Capacity-building initiatives help equip community health workers and local healthcare providers with updated knowledge, technical skills, and effective service delivery approaches to better respond to community health needs.

Satellite and Static Clinics

Access to quality healthcare services remains a major challenge for many underserved populations, especially in remote and disaster-prone areas. Satellite and static clinics help bridge this gap by providing essential primary healthcare, maternal and child health services, immunization, and basic diagnostic support directly to communities, ensuring greater healthcare accessibility and continuity of care.

Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health (MNCAH)

Many families in remote and disadvantaged communities face challenges related to maternal mortality, child malnutrition, adolescent health, and access to quality reproductive healthcare. POPI’s MNCAH interventions aim to improve the health and nutritional status of mothers, newborns, children, and adolescents through integrated healthcare services, awareness, counselling, and timely referrals, contributing to healthier families and communities.

Community-Based Health Care (CBHC)

Community-Based Health Care is a critical approach in Bangladesh for ensuring inclusive and people-centred healthcare services at the grassroots level. Through active community participation, local health volunteers, and outreach initiatives, CBHC promotes preventive healthcare, early detection of illnesses, health education, and improved access to essential services, particularly for poor and marginalized populations.

Family Nutrition through Homestead Food Production

To address nutritional needs, POPI promotes homestead gardening support for programme participants. This initiative not only encourages self-sufficiency but also contributes to improved dietary diversity and nutrition. The programme encourages families, particularly women and caregivers, to cultivate nutrient-rich vegetables and fruits at the household level to strengthen food security and improve nutrition outcomes. Climate-resilient gardening practices also help vulnerable communities maintain access to nutritious foods despite changing weather patterns and environmental challenges.

Other Nutrition-Specific Interventions:

Nutrition awareness and behaviour change communication

Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF)
